Insights and Strategies
Last October, we released our first Insights & Strategies report on Canadian housing. Our report highlighted the need for Canada to build an additional 3.45 million housing units by 2030, beyond the 1.5 million already expected, to make housing prices more affordable. At that time, we estimated that housing starts would need a big increase to around 650,000 per year, starting immediately. This is much higher than the average of 208,000 housing starts recorded annually from 2000 to 2022.
Now, six months later, looking back on what we've learned, we realize the situation has become even more challenging. In this publication, we give an overview of recent developments, delve into relevant government initiatives outlined in Budget 2024, and provide a forecast for future trends in housing supply.
